In 2004 the board  of SIF plc. in Iceland resolved to separate the exports of Icelandic marine products from other activities of SIF plc.  This led to the foundation of Iceland Seafood International at the end of 2004 and in 2005 all shares in Iceland Seafood International were sold to Ker Holding and other investors in the field of seafood.

Iceland Seafood International is the legitimate descendant of three associations and it has inherited an important part of their business connections, both on the producing and the marketing side.  These three associations are the Union of Icelandic Fish Producers (SIF), Iceland Seafood (former Seafood Division of Samband of Iceland) and the Herring Board.
