A Canadian company, known as Magma Energy, has recently bought a majority share in HS Orka, an Icelandic company based in SW Iceland and concerned with the harnessing and distribution of geo-thermal energy. Three MPs of the Left-Greens, one of the two coalition parties, have expressed the view that this investment is illegal and that their support of the government will be at stake, unless the deal is revoked. This could possibly mean the end of the present coalition. If Magma were based in the European Economic Area (instead of Canada) the legality of the deal would not be in question. However, Magma set up an affiliate in Sweden, for the sole purpose of purchasing the shares in HS Orka, and the Left-Greens say that this is not sufficient to meet the requirements of the law. The government has set up a task force of five ministers to find a solution. (Icelandic media).
